These Dutch lessons fit a broader spectrum, and can be useful for those who need different things from the language. Most beginner students will have a handle of survival Dutch by the end of their lesson, which will provide them with enough Dutch to communicate at least at a basic level during short trips to the country, but those who require more would benefit greatly from these sessions. Typical students have been those eager to travel all over the world, those buying overseas property, those with foreign spouses, aficionados of Dutch culture and those who just wish to pass a particular Dutch exam.
These lessons in Dutch are meant for those that feel that learning Dutch would make a change in their work. For starters, it is expedient to learn how to say hello/goodbye, as well as basic business protocol; once the basics have been mastered, reading and writing come to the fore. Students who have greatly benefitted have been involved in import/export, international negotiations and acquisitions, jobseekers in multinational companies where another language is required, and those working in the international academia and government circuits. Even on our most fundamental beginner's lesson, students can anticipate ending the lesson with basic telephone Dutch and e-mail Dutch skills for communicating, as well as survival Dutch if a short visit to the country is needed.
Lessons in Dutch are also accessible for 2 or more studying in tandem (Two-to-One Dutch Lesson or Small Group In-Company Dutch Lesson). All those involved must have around the same experience of the language, similar needs of areas of proficiency, and must be able to work at the same time and place. Bookings must be made for all students at the same time. Listen & Learn do not advise classes of more than 6-8 people, although In-Company Taster Dutch sessions can be run with as many as 12 people.
Dutch is similar to German in many ways, but words do not change form so much, making it quite close to English in some respects
The 'Nederlandse Taalunie' (Dutch Language Union) preserve and oversee the development of the Dutch language
Dutch uses the Latin alphabet with a few extra characters; an easy way of spotting Dutch is the proliferation of double letters, for example the word 'voorraaddoos' ('supply box')
