This makes the city the perfect place to immerse yourself in this wonderful language, as you’ll be able to put your skills to the test on a regular basis, and meet plenty of native speakers without having to travel. On top of that, due to the fact that Vancouver is one of the most diverse cities of the country, you’ll have no trouble finding cultural events and activities where you can learn about the different traditions of Hispanic countries, and meet other learners who feel as passionate about learning the language as you do. You’ll also find plenty of free resources to boost your Spanish at some of the city’s public libraries, so in addition to taking lessons, you’ll be able to improve your vocabulary and grammar on your own, or join one of the many conversation groups.

Although reaching fluency will take time and effort, once you master the language you’ll be able to enjoy wonderful benefits, so if you’re interested in improving your life in the city and making plenty of new friends, don’t hesitate to start studying this fascinating language right now!

Why Study Spanish in Vancouver?

Learn Spanish for Work and Travel

Foreign languages are used in around 15% of jobs in Vancouver, so once you can speak Spanish fluently, you’ll have access to many well-paid positions in tourism, finance, and tech that most people miss out on. What’s more, due to the high percentage of Spanish-speaking immigrants who work in the city, you’ll find that mastering the Spanish language can be an excellent way of building better relationships at the office with people from all around the world, and enjoying a more fulfilling professional life. On the other hand, if you happen to own a business in the city, and you’re looking for ways of helping it expand, becoming bilingual is one of the smartest things you can do, as it will allow you to reach a new segment of the population, and increase your sales. Developing Spanish skills will also allow you to network with other business people from other countries, and access international markets, so as you can see, regardless of what it is you do, speaking a foreign language that’s so popular will open up many doors to take your career to the next level.

Learn Spanish for Social

Although there’s nothing like travelling to get to know other cultures, there are plenty of ways you can explore Spanish and Latin American art, customs and traditions without leaving the city. For example, during Latin American Heritage Month, which takes place every October, you’ll be able to enjoy an exciting series of interactive events which include art exhibitions, street performances, and workshops that celebrate the richness and vitality of countries like Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and many others. One of the events that stands out during this festival is the celebration of Día de Muertos, which takes place at the Latin Market at the end of the month, and features the famous Mexican Catrinas, which are finely dressed skeletal women that represent death, and plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, such as music concerts, traditional dance performances, and workshops.

Alternatively, if you want to know more about Spanish culture, you can’t miss the annual Vancouver International Flamenco Festival in September, where you’ll get to enjoy performances by some of the world’s best dancers and listen to captivating songs from the south of Spain. What’s more, if you want to learn how to dance flamenco, you’ll be able to join some of the free workshops for beginners that are organized around the city, or attend to amazing masterclasses taught by experts.

Learn Spanish for Culture

In addition to learning about other cultures, once you can speak a little Spanish you’ll be able to participate in various language exchange events and make friends from different parts of the world. Regardless of how fluent you are, attending these kinds of events will help you boost your speaking and listening skills really fast, and expand your social circle in the process, so you should do it as frequently as you can. Although there are many wonderful language exchanges you can check out, one of the best is certainly Mi Spanish for your English, which is held twice a week at JJ Bean Coffee Roasters, located at 3399 Cambie Street. If you attend, you’ll be paired with a Spanish native speaker, who will help you boost your conversational skills for an hour in exchange for you helping them improve their English later. Because learners are placed in pairs or small groups, this event is perfect for people who feel too self-conscious when speaking in public so, if this is you, don’t hesitate to attend next time you get the chance.
