Sketchy, one of Boston's favorite slang terms!

<<< Back to Slang USA Cities Map
(adjective) Something suspicious

Used to describe something that seems out of place or is suspect

Joey: “Hey Vince, you know Mikey over there?”

Vince: “I saw him around.  Ain’t he a sketchy kid?”

Joey: “Naw he’s wicked cool.”

The term “sketchy” comes from a practice by the police.  When someone is the victim of a crime, they often give the police a description of the person that committed the crime.  The police will use the information to create a sketch of the suspect.  Because the individual is suspected of doing something wrong, the term “sketchy” became synonymous for possibly guilty of something.

It’s referenced in Anthrax’s song “Killing Box”.
