Pawtna, one of Detroit's favorite slang terms!

<<< Back to Slang USA Cities Map
(noun) Friend

Used to describe a friend or another loyal associate.

TJ: “What up pawtna?”

Damon: “Nuttin’ bro.  Just chillin’.”

TJ: “I need some bites, yo.  Let’s bounce.”

“Pawtna” is used as a very informal way to call someone your friend.  Like many other words classified as “ebonics” in Detroit, it is derived from a mispronunciation of another commonly used English word.  Pawtna is the ebonics way of saying “partner”.  Although calling someone “partner” originated in the old west, it still holds the same meaning when spoken as “pawtna”.

You can see how it is used in Limp Bizkit’s song “Rollin Alright Pawtna”.
