Go Richter, one of Los Angeles's favorite slang terms!

<<< Back to Slang USA Cities Map
(verb) to become angry; to go over the top; react in the extreme.

Sally: “I tried to tell him, but it was no use, but he went Richter on my ass.”

Jane: “What happened?”

Sally: “He was screaming and throwing shit at me. I was lucky to make it out of there.”

Jane: “I’m not telling you what to do, honey, but the next time Tom goes Richter like that, you need to call the police and leave his ass.”

The Richter magnitude scale is the scale used to quantify the size (energy released) of an earthquake. The slang “go off the Richter scale” comes from the same origin and is used to show something has exceeded expectations either in a positive or negative way as in, “Her incoming votes are going off the Richter scale. We’ve never had so many calls for one contestant.” Earthquakes are a big part of LA life, and so the phrase has been shorted to just “go Richter” and can also mean that someone is exceptionally angry about something.
