<<< Back to Slang USA Cities Map
(adjective) Very; Extremely; A lot of

Synonym of “hella” or “wicked.”

“Mad” is apparently used in any and all situations.

Ari:  I'm mad thirsty. Let's go to that place you told me about, the Beauty Bar, and get some martinis.

Nat: Sounds good. There's gonna be mad comedians there tonight, and the cover is only $10.

Ari: Awesome. I am going to get my nails painted bright red, and drug myself with ethanol and laughs.

“Mad” started to be used in the early 1990s (although the adverb “madly”was used before). People in their 30s or younger say “mad” more often, but it is so ubiquitous that it is understood by most New Yorkers.

Rapper Chino XL sings “Your whole game is getting mad sloppy” in his song “Kreep” from the album Here to Save You All (1996).
