Dig it, one of San Francisco's favorite slang terms!

(verb) Enjoy it

If you were in your teens in 1960’s San Francisco, there’s no doubt you were digging the music scene, i.e. you were really enjoying it as well as understanding it.

Grace: “There were more than 12.000 people at the concert…Can you dig that?”

Paul: “That sound awesome, I would have loved it, I’m sure”

Grace: “Oh you would have! They sounded a bit like the Dead”

Paul: “Yeah I was really digging them back in the day!”

People started digging people, things and scenes back in the 1930’s. The word first circled around jazz clubs, where it more or less remained. It didn’t become widely popular until the late 50’s and early 60’s, when musicians and beat poets brought it back to life.

Here are the Mock Turtles and they want to know: Can you dig it?
