English in Chicago

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. With 1.5 billion native and non-native speakers, it has certainly become the language for communication even in countries where it’s not an official language. This means that, in this globalized world, everything is easier for those who speak English fluently, from travelling to getting a better job, particularly if you live in a city like Chicago.

While the USA does not have an official language, English is used daily to work, study, communicate with friends, and everything else! Thus, if you are living in Chicago, knowing English is essential. Most companies, such as Boeing, Exelon, or Berkshire ask their prospective employees to speak English fluently.

Similarly, if you wish to study in a reputable institution like the University of Chicago, you should know that you’ll need to prove a high level of proficiency in English to be admitted. You can sit for internationally accredited exams like TOEFL (and pass it with a score of 100 or higher) and present it as proof of your English level. Mind you, these exams are usually quite challenging, so don’t hesitate to contact us at Listen & Learn if you need help getting ready for them!

Every fourth Tuesday of November, Americans observe a large meal with their families (and sometimes a religious service) to commemorate the harvest feast shared by the English colonies with the indigenous Native Americans that lived in the area. The dishes of this national holiday usually feature turkey, pumpkin, potatoes, and cranberries, but many feasts differ from family to family and from culture to culture.
