New Latin academy

The Pope is planning to set up a new Latin academy to promote the language.

Until the 1960s Vatican documents were only published in Latin but usage has waned. Currently a small team promotes the language but the academy is expected to team up with academics to better “promote the knowledge and speaking of Latin, particularly inside the church,”, a church official said.

Some Jesuit experts have criticised the Vatican and others for translating 21st century words in a way that is not creative. For example, delocalisation was translated as delocalizatio. It is hoped that the academy can assist with these translations.
